  • Learning objectives:
    The course covers the main issues and problems of economic development with regard to methods and sociological theories. The analysis is concerned with the study of economic and productive systems, their diversity and development paths. The aim of this program is to show how sociological theories and concepts can be used to examine the problems of development and underdevelopment in general, and the problems of industrialization.
    Expected learning outcomes.
    The knowledge and skills that will be provided by the course relate to the socio-economic aspects of society and its transformations, methodological issues, and areas of empirical research. The student should be able to: describe the main theories and concepts in sociology and in sociology of economic development; explain the connections between theories, concepts and different cases of economic development.
    At the end of the course the student must possess knowledge and skills related to the sociology of economic development.
    The objective is to contribute to the formation of a professional figure capable of understanding the main issues and problems of economic development in the sociological perspective.

    Knowledge and understanding ability
    At the end of the course, the student must know: - the origins of sociology;
    - the development of social research methods;
    - the areas of application of sociology;
    - the main sociological theories;
    - the study of economic development: differences between sociology and economics;
    - the economic development of backward areas;
    - Keynesian social state and role in economic development;
    - Fordism: characteristics, crisis and development of new production models;
    - the new economic sociology;
    - globalization and the diversity of capitalisms.

    Autonomy of judgment
    At the end of the course the student must be able to recognize and identify:
    - sociological theories for the analysis of economic development;
    - problems and possible solutions to the economic development.

    Communication skills
    At the end of the course the student must be able to use the language and sociological concepts in the analysis and solution of problems related to economic development.

    No prerequisites. 
  • Teaching methods:
    Lectures with the use of slides. 
  • Exam type:
    The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.
    The oral examination aims to evaluate sociological knowledge, clarity of presentation and ability to analyse and interpret economic development.
